My first step towards cultivating my inner domestic goddess!

so, my big personal goal i set at the beginning of this year was to really do my best to cultivate my domestic side and i decided to start in the kitchen… the place we all come to fill our bellies and share our hearts.  now, maybe this doesn’t sound like a huge goal for someone that has been a wife and a mom for 5 years now but i surely have not been intentional about it.  we have eaten take-out for more meals than i would like to admit (way more), surely not put much thought into the health benefits of the things we’ve put into our bodies, and for kitchen organization, LOL, well, there hadn’t been much of that.  every corner in our house was, until recently, full of years of things stuffed into corners and every drawer had pretty much become a junk drawer.  i was always searching for missing items, feeling like i had no counter space to even attempt to cook, and not even having one recipe i felt comfortable cooking, i knew some changes were in store.  the first step was to get rid of all the junk and actually fill the counter with things i would want to cook with on a daily basis.  i’ve been doing a ton of inspirational reading on healthy food choices and i am doing my best to cook a lot of gluten-free recipes and eat more veggies and less packaged foods.  i even have a menu plan and have been attempting some fabulous family-friendly recipes (like from this awesome cookbook).  they even taste good and even if they aren’t perfect, my husband is so overwhelmingly thankful that i am actually trying that i don’t think he would tell me if he didn’t like them anyway!  coming home to a clean and simple space to cook feels inspirational and i have been so motivated in the pursuit of doing my best to serve my husband and children and strive to be more of a proverbs 31 woman.  in sharing with others my desire to serve i have had some negative responses to that word “serve”, but all i can say is that it is important to my marriage, my relationship with God and for my children to see that i value their health, them as individuals, and my role as a wife and mother.  it is important for me to feel like i am trying to step back from being the big ball of stress i have been for years in neglecting my home, my relationships and my worries of our finances as i am taking on a little less work, and just giving it all up to God.  in exchange i feel a wonderful liberation in bringing peace, whole living and balance to our home that has just been missing for a very long time.  this is just the first post of many to come as i organize and simplify my way through our home so stay tuned.   :)

i bought the wonderfully inspirational print on my fridge from this etsy store.  it gives me dreams of the farmhouse we will someday retire in.   :)

joy your kitchen is soooo cute! gosh, i guess it makes me feel a wee bit better that you can be uninspired in such an inspirational space! sometimes i think “if my kitchen were cooler, i’d like to cook more!” yaay for such a wonderful resolution… it isn’t easy but hopefully each day it will become more & more routine until you look back and wonder how in the world you ate so much take out! xoxo

  3. Rosina says:

WOW. Joy…can I have your kitchen?? I love all those jars and all the natural light that’s coming in! Our kitchen is graced with the amazing fluorescent light. And yes, we’re trying to eat more natural and better foods, too. It’s a lifestyle change–a good friend did it, so I think I can, too. :)

Joy…I used to teach high school and I felt very much the way you described…I also felt that same “liberation” when I became a SAHM and began to put my husband and children first! I am really, really excited for you and this new venture!!!! Plus, your kitchen is AWESOME…love, love, love it!!! I thought I would share this quote from Feminine Appeal (by Carolyn Mahaney) with you, “Homemaking is a vocation often filled with mundane tasks and repetitive chores, most of which are performed in obscurity. It demands a colossal amount of serving and sacrrifice. Sometimes between scrubbing toilets or laundering dirty clothes, we can lose sight of the significance of our calling…what we need is a biblical perspective. For in God’s economy, homemaking is a high and noble calling…our homes can be a place of momentous ministry. They are strategic locations from which we can reach out and extend care to those who don’t yet know Christ.” So excited for you, Joy!!:)

Your kitchen is just beautiful! I love the colors of everything. I have a gluten intolerance and it is always a challenge to find recipes that turn out yummy and the rest of the family will eat. I really like the book, gluten-free cooking by lyndel costain & joanna farrow. Everything I have made from it has been really good!

  11. courtney says:

This blog entry is a great source of “service” in itself Joy let alone your magnificent kitchen & the changes you are making to your family life! Thank you so much for the little reminder of the Proverbs 31 women. It certainly has the power to put life into perspective and highlight God’s great plan for us xx Your images are beyond perfection as always xx

  15. Brandi says:

So lovely! Best of luck on your domestic and Proverbs 31 path!

  16. Kristin Guynn says:

If someone could pull my ideal kitchen out of my head and bring it to life yours would be it!!! So amazingly gorgeous!!!

As for ‘serving’ your husband. I totally agree! People take the word servant and think of it as slave, but it’s not! The Bible says women are to be a ‘crown’ unto their husbands. The literal translation of that it to encompass or surround. You are doing that and I think it’s so amazing! Beautiful Joy! Just beautiful!

  17. Jennifer says:

  21. joy harmon prouty says:

thank you SO, SO, SO very much for the support! i will also say that the kitchen doesn’t always look as perfect as it does in these photos, LOL. usually there is a scattering of toy story figures, random socks, half eaten fruit and yogurts and sticker residue. ;) but really, it means so much that you all support not only the idea of organization but the acts of service that bring a family together. what a wonderful blessing to have friends around the world that connect with my heart on a deep level, it is a wonderful and precious gift.

  22. Jenny says:

OMGosh, I Lurve it! Can you come to Alaska and help me with mine!!! I have been thinking about painting my cabinets, but a little scared. And I want to step out of the storebought look, where everything matches. Your just so good at this. And I totally agree with the whole post. This is our childrens life, upbringing. This is what they will talk about when they are our age! Scary to think about sometimes. Seriously, want to vacation in Alaska right next to the Kenai River?!

  31. clair says:

This is a very encouraging post. Thanks for sharing your insights. I’m sad that some people react poorly to the word “serve” as there is so much happiness to be found in doing it. What did Christ spend his life doing? Serving others. I’m not great at it, but I know I feel good when I make the effort. And really, the ability to serve increases as we get our home lives in order. And what a priviledge to serve the love of your life and the little people in your own home. As I type this I see that it is really all connected. Anyway, I share your desire to improve the peace of my home by giving my domestic challenges some more TLC. Look forward to more posts on this topic!

  32. Lauren says:

Kudos to you,Joy! It is so sad that so many people react negatively to the word “serve” when being a homemaker and Proverbs 31 woman is really how God wired us women, and fulfilling that God-given desire is how we can be most fulfilled and bring the most glory to Him! We have had to foray into gluten free cooking lately–Carol Fenster’s 1000 gluten free recipes is the best! And I must say, your kitchen is hands down the most adorable I have ever seen! I’m in awe!

  33. jenny haas says:

um wow. well, you just are so great, I want to be your friend :)

  34. beverly says:

  35. Laura Rhoades says:

I absolutely LOVE the wallpaper(?) with the big teal flowers. Would you mind sharing where it came from?

  36. Thea says:

I was just looking through my inspiration file-where I save pictures that inspire me, and I came across this delightful photo of a swing/bed/sofa that I would love to have in my living room when we get a farm house:)

Just not sure our regular old split level has beams that could support such a thing. Hmmm, I wonder if I need to wait for the farm house.

The past few months I have been refocusing, trusting god that all the other stuff I obsess about and have let run my life- mostly work…will be taken care of by him, if I direct attention to being present in my family, my marriage, my parenting, and my home. It was spurred on by a comment my husband made about being somewhat embarrassed to have some friends over for the first time because our house was so thrown together, not reflecting us in any way. Slowly I have been working on changing this. Cleaning out some of the junk in all the drawers and closets-giving myself permission to leave the things I want there, because the thought of clearing out and organizing at the same time is way too much.LOL. We have been thinking about painting our standard oak cabinets, and I just adore your chalkboard fronts. Did you paint the cabinets yourself? Was it challenging? I love the glimpses you shared and look forward to seeing more.

  40. Sarah @ Handbags*N*Pigtails says:

All I can say is: you are already proving to be a wise woman.(Prv 31) There is no greater fulfillment and joy than when we’re doing God’s purpose for us. Wife & mother-those are not only jobs but callings. May you be richly blessed for choosing to serve God by serving those around you….and with a cheerful heart!
I have just found a new favorite blog!(Your kitchen is lovely as well:))
    XO,
    Sarah

  41. Brittany Amundson says:

first of all let me just say, that you are one of my very favorite photographers! your work continues to inspire me every time a get a chance to visit your blog. As a fellow photographer (and Christian) I literally think every time i look at your posts “i want to be her when i grow up” (it doesn’t seem to matter that i myself am married and 27 years old…i’m still just a kid at heart)
anyway your home looks beautiful and keep up the good work I know God will continue to bless you, your work, and your family.
